Biennial Report on Academic Libraries

The U.S. Department of Education has released their biennial survey on academic libraries titled: Academic Libraries 2010: First Look.

Some of the statistics from this report:

Expenditures
Just under half of academic libraries, 1,739, had total expenditures of $500,000 or more in fiscal year 2010. Another 581 academic libraries had total expenditures under $100,000.

During fiscal year 2010, academic libraries spent about $3.4 billion on salaries and wages, representing approximately 50 percent of total library expenditures.

Academic libraries spent approximately $152.4 million for electronic books, serial backfiles, and other materials in fiscal year 2010 (table 10). Expenditures for electronic current serial subscriptions totaled about $1.2 billion. During fiscal year 2010, academic libraries spent approximately $142.7 million for computer hardware and software.

The journal also includes literary and cultural analyses of classic and contemporary writing for young adults.

Journal of Research on Libraries and Young Adults invites manuscripts based on original qualitative, quantitative, synthetic, or mixed method research; an innovative conceptual framework; or a substantial literature review that opens new areas of inquiry and investigation. Case studies and works of literary analysis are also welcome. The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) conducts an international survey on intellectual freedom worldwide as it relates to libraries. The World Report is a biennial report series that reports on the state of the world in terms of freedom of access to information, freedom of expression and related issues. The reports are available online at http://www.ifla.org/en/publications/iflafaife-world-report-series and can be downloaded free of charge.

For the first time the 2010 Report has been designed as a customizable interactive electronic publication. The country-oriented map interface allows users to produce a full or partial country report or comparative country reports. The question-oriented interface allows users to get information on a single question for all countries that have participated in the 2010 Report. By hovering with the mouse over a map of the world or clicking on the map, data for the specific question is shown in a popup window.

Welcome back to a new academic year. I have some updates from database vendors about problems.

I received this update from Serials Solutions today: "As you may be aware, searches conducted against EBSCO databases using 360 Search are not returning results. It appears that EBSCO made changes to how federated search queries are handled against their databases, which in turn broke 360 Search connections. Unfortunately, we learned of this earlier today. We are working as quickly as possible to resolve this issue."

This lengthy statement is from JSTOR about problems caused by their new interface. "On August 21, 2010, JSTOR released a new interface. One feature of this new interface - the ability for any user to submit a search against all JSTOR content - drew strong reactions from many in the library community. The key concern expressed was that JSTOR users at participating institutions with a subset of JSTOR collections could get search results pointing to content they could not access, and that JSTOR had not yet enabled OpenURL for all articles, making it difficult for libraries to use link resolvers to re-direct users to other copies of the articles that might be available to them.

In response, JSTOR is issuing an update to the changes released in August. This update is scheduled for today, Thursday, September 2. Beginning later today, the default option for authenticated users on all search forms will be to search licensed content only. Authenticated users include users on campus or users logged in via a remote access option. Our reason for taking this step is to reduce any potential frustration for authenticated users until we can extend support for OpenURL linking throughout the platform, at which point librarians will be able to direct their users to alternative options for accessing content not licensed through JSTOR.

How will this work?
• For authorized users at participating institutions, the checkbox for “Include only content I can access” on the Advanced Search form will be selected by default. Individual users will be able to deselect the checkbox if they wish to search across all content.
• Other JSTOR search forms—the new basic search box on each page, the Citation Locator, and search within a journal—will also default to searching only licensed content.
• After receiving search results for any search, any user may still elect to view all results for all content including unlicensed content."

CHICAGO – The American Association of School Librarians’ (AASL) Board of Directors voted at the ALA Midwinter Meeting in Boston on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010, to officially adopt for the profession the title school librarian.

A recent AASL survey indicated confusion, misperceptions, and inconsistencies about various job titles in the school librarian profession. The AASL Affiliate Assembly requested that the AASL Board of Directors choose a title for its professionals that is clear to other educators, administrators, and the public, and that presents a common nomenclature for all publications and advocacy efforts.

AASL leadership reviewed the data and identified the advantages and disadvantages of the various titles. After a focused and extensive discussion, the AASL Board of Directors voted to adopt school librarian as the title which reflects the roles of the 21st-century school library professional as a leader, instructional partner, information specialist, teacher, and program administrator.

As the overarching strategic goal of AASL is to achieve universal recognition of school librarians as indispensable educational leaders, AASL will work to advance and promote the title school librarian, and will open dialog concerning stakeholders’ needs, wants, and preferences; the current realities and evolving dynamics of the professional environment; the capacity and strategic position of the association; and the ethical implications relevant to this decision.

Libraries in Haiti

Forwarding a post about the condition of libraries in Haiti:

Dear all,

Here is a brief point on the situation in Haiti.

We have a contact with Patrick Tardieu who is an archivist in the oldest library in Port au Prince, Bibliothèque des Pères du Saint Esprit.
Fortunately, he's alive and flighted yesterday to Canada. The first information we have are:

- Saint Martial College in which there is the Bibliothèque Haïtienne des pères du saint esprit collapsed

- The national Library collapsed, at least a part of it

- Most of the university libraries collapsed too

Those libraries gathered very old collections (from the 16th centuries).
Several manuscripts were brought by the missionaries who came from Europe.
Other have been collected in the Caraibs (notably, publications on the haitian revolutions, transcriptions of vaudou oral traditions, personal documents from the 18th centuries).

We think it's urgent to run an international campaign for saving these collections, at least in France, the US and Canada. We have to create a dedicated funds to launch the campaign and raise money. In our side, we are already in contact with the French IFLA comittee (International Federation of Library Association), the Foreign Affairs (through its agency
CulturesFrance) and the culture ministry. In the US we will work with professor Laurent Dubois, Duke University, who has a good knowledge of these collections and is ready to rally the archivists and the historians community. Patrick Tardieu, who is in Canada now will help us too, to have a better knowledge of the situation.

We have to prepare, for next week to :

1/ Open a dedicated fundraising paypal account at least in the US and France for the operation (not only focused on the emergency of saving these collections but also on the effort of rebuilding in the next months)

2. Work with organizations such as IFLA, UNESCO and the FOKAL Foundation (its director, Elizabeth Pierre Louis, who we well know is still missing for the moment) in order to avoid the redundancies.

3/ Prepare to form a team of curator, archivists, historians and logistics coordinators who would be ready to go there in the next weeks or months.

For the moment we have good contacts in Guadeloupe. We might need to find places in Canada and in the US. People are mobilizing there and could prepare rapidly to host the collections for a while. Patrick Tardieu told me that we maybe could host them in other places in Haiti if the roads are ok.
We'll check up on this point next week. Our principal ennemy will be the rain from now. The collections could be destroyed forever. Most of these pieces are unique.

We'll have more info hopefully next week on the collections and the situation there. Don't hesitate to share the news you'd have.

Cataloger’s Desktop has migrated to a new platform. Now the first screen you will see asks for a password. We still have IP access so don't be confused. What they are asking for is a personal account login. CD would like you to establish a personal login so you can set up your preferences. If you previously set up an account in the old system, your password should still work.

Our account is still for a limited number of users, so when a whole class is trying to use it you may get a message that the number of users has been reached.

The library as we know it is undergoing a rapid change because of the advent of online alternatives. Even so, these portals of knowledge are more important than ever in our lives because of the benefits they bring to the world of education and teaching, because of the way they help the learning process, and because of the easy access they offer to knowledge and information. Online or offline, libraries play a huge role in improving the literacy of the world by:

• Providing access to knowledge sources: Libraries are huge stores of knowledge, and they are now available to anyone who wants to broaden their horizons and augment their learning. It’s easy today to access books and educational resources with the click of a button, more so because of the digitization process that most libraries have gone through. Even in regular libraries, it’s easy to access information because the catalogue is computerized and searches are made easier.

• Igniting the thirst for more knowledge: When you go to a library, your thirst for knowledge is whetted by the number of resources that are available to you. If you are interested in a particular subject, the more information you have on it, the more you are bound to learn. You’re also able to pick up additional knowledge on related subjects.

• Aiding the education process through extra resources: When you’re a student and enrolled in school or college, a library offers you extra resources and support to augment your regular education. It allows you to study more efficiently, learn more than you need to, and understand what you are learning.

• Showing you the importance of books: Books are a treasure, no matter if they are made of paper and ink or bits and bytes. The more the number of libraries around, the more we are going to value books, especially the ones that are not easily available today.

Libraries are great in aiding the learning process, if only the learning makes an effort to knock at their portals in search of knowledge and information.

Move Over Wikipedia Google Knol is Open for Business

Move over Wikipedia Google's Knol has officially opened its doors. Knol will feature "knols", which Google is defining as "authoritative articles about specific topics." Topics will range from scientific concepts, to medical information.

Many believe that Wikipedia's chief rival will be Knol. While this may be true...there are several significant differences between Knol and Wikipedia. Some of the more important ones include Knol's requirement for signed and verified authorship. Additionally, though the community will be permitted to edit entries, authors will be given the opportunity to moderate changes.

Gee...this girl can't help but wonder whether Knol's content will receive special treatment regarding ranking and return on search with Google???

From Awareness to Funding: A Study of Library Support in America

OCLC was awarded a grant by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to explore attitudes and perceptions about library funding. Some of the findings of that study include the fact that library funding support is only "marginally related to library visitation." The perceptions of librarians are an important predictor of support for funding and voters who see the library as a 'transformational' force as opposed to an 'informational' source are more likely to vote to increase taxes in support of the library.

Express libraries, self service studied

The Milwaukee Public Library is studying the possibility of opening three "express libraries" giving patrons access to library material and services at convenient places. These services are not intended to take the place of current library services, instead they're intended to add another dimension to service.

At each express library, patrons would check out or return books or other items they had ordered over the Internet, use computers to request additional items, or pick up a telephone hotline that would take them straight to the Reference desk at the central library. In addition to community supermarkets, it is envisioned that express libraries would be located in coffee shops or even at airports.

JSTOR sent an email regarding changes to their platform which I am passing along.

Platform Update
A JSTOR platform update was completed today. This update includes several bug fixes:
• The "Page of First Match" feature is restored. With this fix, selecting the "Page of First Match" link now takes users to the first page upon which a search term appears, rather than the first page of the article.
• The ability to jump to search term locations by page is restored. Users will now see the "View list of pages with search term(s)" option at the top of each article page, and then may follow a link to each page that contains one or more of their search terms.
• Thumbnail images on the "Images in JSTOR" tab are restored.
• Several bugs with searching author names, phrase searching, wildcard searching, and fuzzy searching are corrected.
• Citations are now numbered on the Export Citations and Email Citations pages.
• Date formats are corrected in the delimited lists for JSTOR collections.
Please note that an error that causes difficulties with the Adobe Reader Find and Search functionality in downloaded PDFs is not fixed at this time. This fix was originally scheduled for this release but needed to be withdrawn for further development. We are actively working on this issue and plan to release this fix as soon as possible.

Guest Post: Book your Copy Today - E-Books or Paperbacks?

Books have been and will always be my first, last and lasting love. They’re my oldest friends and most faithful companions. So it naturally follows that my most prized possession is my extensive book collection. With the advent of the Internet and online books, my catalog has increased, but I have ambiguous feelings about the addition to my treasure trove – mixed emotions that arise because I’m not as thrilled to be reading e-Books as I am when holding genuine bound paper in my hands. Here’s why I feel that paper-and-print will always rule over bits-and-bytes:

• An e-Book ties you to a computer while a regular book follows you wherever you go – on a bus, train or airplane, in your handbag or tucked in your hand.
• Logging onto my computer just to read a book is tiresome, and once I’ve logged on, there are various distractions (online diversions) that detract from the reading pleasure.
• My favorite books are dog-eared and smudged showing the wear and tear of multiple readings, a characteristic even the most-read of e-Books will not reflect (though some would consider this an advantage).
• You don’t have to depend on electricity (or a battery that lasts long enough) to be able to finish a book – well-lit candles will do just fine.
• And best of all, an e-Book is not the cuddliest of companions when you’re tucked up in bed and want something to read before you drift to sleep.

But then the proponents of e-Books have this to say in their favor:

• They’re compact and do not take up space in your house.
• They never tear or become yellow with age or fall prey to silverfish.
• You can have more than one copy at no extra cost, thus protecting your investment should a book be corrupted or be eaten up by online viruses.
• They’re sometimes available for free on the Internet, and even if they cost money, they’re more cost-effective than their paper counterparts.
• E-Book readers come with built-in voice versions that allow children and the blind to listen to the book being read aloud (although I would argue this point with the fact that the voice is robotic and devoid of emotions)
• You can set font styles and sizes to suit your reading comfort.

Irrespective of the medium, the words remain the same. At the end of the day, I guess that’s what really matters to true book lovers – the availability of well-written prose or poetry to enrich both the mind and soul!

As described by their website: Cataloger's Desktop is an easily searchable, online cataloging tool created by the Library of Congress. Cataloger's Desktop provides fingertip access online to AACR2 and LC's most heavily used cataloging publications. Is Google Making Us Stupid?

A fascinating article written by Nicholas Carr appears on pages 56-63 in the July/August 2008 issue of Atlantic. The article explores the idea that spending too much time surfing the web is "re-wiring" our brain, changing the way we think and process information.

Here's a snippet from the article:

"The idea that our minds should operate as high-speed data-processing machines is not only built into the workings of the Internet, it is the network’s reigning business model as well. The faster we surf across the Web—the more links we click and pages we view—the more opportunities Google and other companies gain to collect information about us and to feed us advertisements. Most of the proprietors of the commercial Internet have a financial stake in collecting the crumbs of data we leave behind as we flit from link to link—the more crumbs, the better. The last thing these companies want is to encourage leisurely reading or slow, concentrated thought. It’s in their economic interest to drive us to distraction."

Encyclopaedia Britannica To Follow Modified Wikipedia Model

Ohio Reference Excellence on the Web - Training Modules

I came across this wonderful website by sheer happenstance - its called the Ohio Reference Excellence on the Web. Looking at the site, I see it's been around for some time, though this is the first time I've ever seen or heard of it. It was developed by the Ohio Library Council. It's a series of six self-paced modules designed to improve the quality of reference service. The modules cover the reference process and include a variety of resource links, exercises, and quizzes to help you sharpen your reference skills.

Binding

About fifty volumes of library science journals are being sent out for binding. They are expected back from the bindery on July 1. Therefore you might want to call the library to check if we have the journal you need before you come in for it during this period.

Hours for live chat

The library now has assigned hours for AskALibrarian live chat. This service enables you to have your reference questions answered in real-time by a reference librarian. Previously there were no set hours and it was hit or miss whether you would get a librarian, depending on staffing. Now you know when a librarian will be available to assist you. Links to the service are available on the main library website and the library and information science website.

Chat hours are Monday -Thursday 9-12 a.m. and 6-10 p.m. and Fridays 9-5.

From the same page you can e-mail your reference question. E-mails are generally responded to by a reference librarian within 48 hours, except during weekends, holidays, and other times when the Library is closed.

RefShare Trial

We have a short trial to evaluate RefShare, a RefWorks add-on module. This trial will run through the end of April.
Access has been enabled for all users.

RefShare allows users from subscribing organizations to share their entire RefWorks database, or just specific folders from their RefWorks database. Users can share these items with other users in their organization, publicly with other colleagues or with non-RefWorks users.

Information for RefWorks users who want to share their data, as well as instructions for RefShare users, can be found on the RefWorks home page, www.refworks.com
User tutorials on RefShare can be accessed from within the RefWorks program by clicking on Help. Go to "Tutorials" under "RefWorks User Support."

The Metadata Encoding and Transmission Standard: Primer and Reference Manual by the Digital Library Foundation is available as a PDF online. It provides examples of METS standards for metadata about digital objects.

Cabell's Directory online

The library now has remote access to Cabell’s Directory of Publishing Opportunities. Cabell’s provides information about publication guidelines for journals in various subject areas. This includes contact information, circulation information, percentage of invited articles, topic areas the journal emphasizes and type of readership, manuscript guidelines, type of review process, number of reviewers, time required for review, availability of reviewers' comments, and fees charged to review or publish the manuscript. In other words, information to help you select a journal to get your article published.

One of the Cabell's directories is particularly for Educational Technology and Library Science journals. The Educational Curriculum and Methods directory also includes a subset for Library Science / Information Resources.

Remote access to Ulrich's

The LIU community now has remote access to the Ulrich's database.

Changes to Haworth Press

Haworth Press. which publishes many journals in library science, was acquired by Taylor & Francis. According to Haworth, "One factor, in our view, was that in order to grow, Haworth needed a consistently creative internet platform that could compete successfully with other platforms of major houses. The stability of a prodigious international publishing house also adds an important dimension in regard to digital permanency."

Long Island University now has ScienceDirect. This means you can access Elsevier journals online including these journals in the LIS collection: Information Processing and Management, Interacting with Computers, International Information and Library Review, International Journal of Human-Computer Studies, Journal of Academic Librarianship, Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association, Library Collections, Acquisitions, & Technical Services, Library and Information Science Research, and Serials Review. Direct links are set up on the LIS electronic journals webpage. As of 2008, at the University all Elsevier journals will only be available electronically through ScienceDirect and will no longer be subscribed to in print.
