Relevance of Libraries in a Digital Age Teleconference

Come one... Come all...

Please join us for a teleconference to discuss the future relevance of libraries as we know them. The digital age has been with us long enough to make some practical predictions of how traditional roles of libraries will change in information selection, acquisition, synthesis, navigation, dissemination, interpretation and archiving. New responsibilities in information aggregation, publishing education, research and development and policy advocacy will be explored. It promises to be a lively and provocative session and will take place Friday, May 11 in Library, Room 220. The program will run from noon-1:30. Feel free to bring your lunch. Coffee and a light refreshment will be served.

Global Voices Online

Another suggestion presented at Computers in Libraries -- For a more global perspective on the news try Global Voices Online. For breaking global news their bloggers may be on the scene in areas where the mainstream media doesn't have reporters. Or they may just present a different perspective on the news.

"Global Voices Online is a non-profit global citizens’ media project founded at Harvard Law School’s Berkman Center for Internet and Society. Our international team of volunteer authors, regional blogger-editors and translators are your guides to the global blogosphere.

These amazing people are bloggers who live in various countries around the world. We have invited them as contributors or hired them as editors because they understand the context and relevance of information, views, and analysis being posted every day from their countries and regions on blogs, podcasts, photo sharing sites, videoblogs - and other kinds of online citizen media. They are helping us to make sense of it all, and to highlight things that bloggers are saying which mainstream media may not be reporting."

Instead of Googling

At Computers in Libraries 2007 Meredith Farkas suggested instead of Googling, try searching del.icio.us to see what sites other people find interesting through popular tagging. Or search Blogpulse to find your term in blog conversations.
